I know the clergy often find themselves in a unique position. They are servants of God who are also charged with providing for their congregation. I’m sure this can be a daunting task. As a counselor, I know that many parishioners would prefer to talk with their spiritual advisor about their personal and family problems than they would consult a professional therapist. This can be seriously challenging situation for clergy. While you have the Bible as your foundation and sometimes can clearly see a better path for your congregation member, you may not have the counseling background or experience to provide the help they truly need. Reality Therapy is a relative easy, four-step process to help people reflect on their own behavior and solve problems. You, the helper, are really not the expert with all the answers, but rather you provide the guidance to help your parishioners figure out what path is best for them. Reality Therapy will provide you with a structure, a road map if you will, for providing counseling interventions for people in need.

Choice Theory®, the theory behind Reality Therapy is a nondenominational approach but clearly integrates well with Biblical teachings. When others have asked me to explain Choice Theory® briefly, I tell them it’s similar to the Serenity Prayer. Choice Theory® is about helping people stop wasting their energy on attempting change things they have no control over and helping them to use their resources more wisely on things they can change—their own behavior and thinking. So many of today’s problems are caused by unhappy relationships—couples, parents and children, people at work. No one wants to change what they are doing so they can improve the relationships. It is easier to stay stuck and blame the other people for what they are or are not doing. Unfortunately, this approach leaves people very frustrated and not knowing where to turn. Choice Theory® help them understand why people do what they do and then to create a plan to affect change by changing something they are doing. It’s a very powerful process.
I learned reality therapy and Choice Theory® in 1987 and loved it much that I became an instructor myself in 1988 so I could teach these ideas to anyone else who wanted to develop the expertise. Over the years, I have taught thousands of helping professionals just like you. Some came to the training because they wanted to get the information; others came because they worked for a company who made the training mandatory. Whatever the original circumstances, most left my workshop very pleased they had attended, with a new outlook how to better help others and a positive attitude and concrete plan for implementation.

This is no ordinary workshop where you sit behind a table while you listen to someone speak all day for a week. This training is highly interactive, allowing all participants the opportunity to learn the information in whatever mode they learn best. You will help others evaluate the effectiveness of their choices. You will practice giving feedback by facilitating the other person’s self-evaluation.

As far as training programs go, training in Choice Theory®/Reality Therapy is relatively inexpensive. For an individual pastor attending a week of training, the cost is $500 per person. If you can get a group of at least twelve (12) interested people together who want to receive the training, then it would be more cost effective to hire me to come to one of your churches where I can train up to sixteen (16) individuals for $6000 without them incurring any travel expenses.

This training will help you gain the confidence you seek on a daily basis. It will give you a model to explain all human behavior and a direction for how to proceed with those you serve.
I offer this week of training in two possible formats. It is either offered as a one-week, four to five consecutive days of training totaling a minimum of 27 hours or it can be offered two-days one week and two days within two weeks of the first days of training for a minimum of 30 hours of training.

The William Glasser Institute provides for a scholarship program for individuals demonstrating economic need. There are a limited number of full paid and half paid scholarships available, so apply early.
