If you’re like me, you often find yourself going over the same issues with the same people without a lot of change. People seem to understand what the problem is but they don’t seem to be making the forward progress you’d like to see them make. And your academic training taught you a little about a lot of different theories preparing you for an eclectic therapeutic career. Clients’ problems seem to be more complex and you spend more time doing paperwork than working face-to-face with people.

When I went to college and later graduate school, I learned a lot of things. I studied a little of this and a little of that and was told to take an “eclectic” approach. I’m still not exactly sure I knew what that meant. It felt a lot like “flying by the seat of my pants!”

I tried some things that worked; I tried other things that didn’t. Then, in 1987, I was introduced to the concepts developed by Dr. William Glasser, Reality Therapy and Choice Theory®.  Finally, I had a road map, a model for how to proceed with the people I was attempting to help. When I felt lost, I had a framework to revisit and get myself, and consequently, my client back on track. Using Reality Therapy doesn't mean you can't use all the wonderful things you are using now -- it just provides you with a theory that conceputalizes the problem and a counseling method that puts the responsibility for change where it belongs -- with your clients.

I loved reality therapy and Choice Theory® so much that I became an instructor myself in 1993 so I could teach these ideas to anyone else who wanted to develop the expertise. Over the years, I have taught thousands of helping professionals just like you. Some came to the training because they wanted to get the information; others came because they worked for a company who made the training mandatory. Whatever the original circumstances, most left my workshop very pleased they had attended, with a new outlook on their practice and a positive attitude for implementation.

Choice Theory® takes the mystery out of behavior—yours and theirs. It provides an explanation for why we do the things we do. Choice Theory® explains how a person’s perceptions shape their reality and teaches the four components of behavior. Armed with this new knowledge, problem conceptualization becomes much easier as well as determining the most appropriate treatment method. You will take a new and different approach to creating behavior change in your clients.

Reality therapy is a short-term approach with long-term results. When you learn how to use it, you will be teaching your clients Choice Theory® so they can begin to use the process with themselves. Reality therapy helps clients move from a victim role to empowered self-reliance.

This is no one-day training event. This is a week-long workshop. There is a total of 27-30 hours of intense training. This is not some boring “stand and deliver” training where you sit passively and learn from some “expert instructor.” This is an interactive workshop, where you will be practicing the skills you learned. If you are not serious about taking your supervision skills to the next lever, don’t come. This workshop will challenge you and will learn more than you thought possible in 4-4½ days.  

And, if you act today, you will be enrolled in a Basic Intensive Week of training in the ideas and concepts of Dr. William Glasser’s Reality Therapy, Choice Theory®, Lead Management and Quality School Program. What about those individuals who won’t get on board? Every agency has those people who refuse to look at doing things differently. They are the ones who are either terrified of change, are sure their methods are the only ones that truly work or are simply oppositional to any new ideas that are introduced. When we begin to teach Glasser’s ideas to an entire program or agency, we like to start at the top with either the CEO, Executive Director or Program Director and then proceed with any other individuals who are interested in learning the concepts, ideas and techniques.

What then begins to happen is that other staff start to notice the success that their colleagues are experiencing and many will become curious as to what’s making the difference. Those who are still resistant will remain resistant but there will be so few of them that their presence will be inconsequential. Some may even leave your agency because they won’t be able to tolerate the pressure to get on board. This will be an internal pressure as well as a pressure from the other employees, not necessarily from management.

Helpers

Naturally, widespread implementation of the Choice Theory®/Reality Therapy treatment approach is greatly exciting—the thought of an entire agency or program immersing itself in one philosophy for the betterment of all. However, it is possible for you to make a difference with your individual caseload, even if you are the only one in your agency using the concepts.

This training will help you gain the confidence you seek on a daily basis. It will give you a model to explain all human behavior and a direction for how to proceed with your clients or consumers.

I offer this week of training in two possible formats. It is either offered as a one-week, four to five consecutive days of training totaling a minimum of 27 hours or it can be offered two-days one week and two days within two weeks of the first days of training for a minimum of 30 hours of training.

Scholarships

The William Glasser Institute provides for a scholarship program for individuals demonstrating economic need. Reality Therapy Certification

Certification is a five-step process. If you are interested in certification in Choice Theory® and Reality Therapy, then this Basic Intensive Week is the first step. The certification process can occur in as little as 18 months. Certification can take as long as a person wants. There is no expiration date on training.
